Hi Jodie, I'm Karyn & have 2 kids with PKU we also live in St Helens Pk, email me & I can give you my contact details.
|
Hi you will probably find that her levels will be high anyway because of the virus, my kids levels go up when they are unwell & most will. They normally say to try watering down their supplement to see if they will drink it when they are sick. Don't worry too much all kids go off their food at times whether they have PKU or not, she will get back to normal when she is feeling better.

Lara not yet 5 yrs has been asking for years if things have protein in them but the last couple of weeks she has also been asking if things have Aspartame in them !! Talk about switched on . I gave Thomas ( 2yrs ) a bugger tonight & he asked if it had protein. Got to be happy with that.

Hi sorry for the delay have been busy +++. Wraps:- 180g flour total, i generally use 3/4 low pro, then split the other 1/4 between potato & corn flours, some taco seasoning,1 heaped tsp baking powder, 2 tblsp oil & about 8 tblsp cold ( from fridge ) H2O- may need slightly more, just to make it into a nice soft dough. Knead in bowl then roll out into tortilla shapes, using a little low pro flour to stop it sticking ( i sometimes cut out around a small bread plate to get a more professional shape. Cook briefly on both sides in an pan (spray with oil)then allow to cool on wire rack & freeze in zip lock bag, reheat in mocro covered in glad for about 30sec.
Pastry:- 125g low pro flour,1/2 tsp baking powder,60g nuttalex, about 2 tblsp cold H2O ( i find from fridge works best. Rud marg into dry ingreds until resembles bread crumbs then gradulally add H2O, i find a nice soft dough works well, then roll & cut as needed. I use this for pies, pasties etc.
Pasties:- pastry as above then boil & mash swede (+/- potato, depends how much protein you want them to be) then finely chop carrots(par cook) & what other veges you want, make the mash fairly dry, with some nuttalex, add herds etc to taste then cut out circles of pastry & place about 1 tsp of mix in middle & press edges together, spray with oil & bake ( can be frozen ). Vege balls:- mash swede/ potato add other veges as desired can also add low pro rice if you want, if you need u can add some potato flour to hold together, then roll into shape ( or u can roll into low pro bread crumbs) & bake ( can freeze these too). My kids also love piklets, either apple & cinnamon or corn & vege ones. when they were little i also used to make tomato & onion straws for them or cut into different shapes also, they still like these although i dont make them that often anymore. hope this helps Karyn

hi, I'm Karyn & have 2 kids with PKU, Lara 5 in January ( wow where did that go ) & Thomas 2. Now they just have low protein versions of what we r eating, ie stirfrys, Vege casseroles, vege strogenoff, low pro pasta/rice ( from either loprofin or aprotein) - these r a great way to bulk up their meals. When they were little pureed fruit/ veges progressing to lumpy, i even crushed up the low pro breakfast loops & mixed with breast milk or vance's dairy free. you dont need to count most fruit ( except for bananas, mulberries & promengrants ) if you r using the counting of grams of protein, the fruit & vege u need to count r in the orange section of your handouts- just look at the last column to tell you how much contains 1g protein. my kids also love wraps, can give u a recipe if u like, mine started eating these around 12 months & r a big favorite. there r commercial things out there that they can eat you just need to keep an eye out. in regards to Birthdays, I use a cake mix from the USA or reciently found a nice one at the gluten free expo-Well & Good all Purpose cake mix 1.9g/100g dry mix then use No egg, or the Basco buttercake & cup cake mixes r 1.1g/100g dry mix, i made vege balls & vege mini pasties, along with either smiley faces or chips & things like that that everyone can have. cheers Karyn

Hi Jalal, Here in Australia we either breast feed or give normal formula in conjunction with a special formula called Analog XP ( this is on prescription & we get from a drug store ). Have you been to a specialist at a Children's hospital for your baby? Hope this helps Karyn

Yes I had both the kids with me & they were really good & had fun trying different breads, biscuits & honey popcorn, along with some of the dips/salsas. they have eaten one of the bagels so far & thought it was good, got some par baked rolls also but haven't tried them yet, that was all they had there in the lower pro stuff but i intend to place an order for all the stuff to try later in the week.
