My "special milk" as a kid was always mixed with strawberry or banana nesquick.... YUCK. I can't stand the smell of that stuff now.

Let me know where and when and I'll try and be there. A longer trip for me as I'm in regional Vic but with a bit of notice I might be able to make it.

Hi Tracey,
I'm on the maternal diet atm. Have done so successfully before, I have a 2 yr old little girl, very healthy and bright.
It's a frustrating diet and very difficult so, Good Job. 309 levels are still very good!

I found first time around I was always very hunrgy, I went to the Gym a a lot and was using up a lot of energy (I don't get there so much anymore with a 2 year old) my dieticians put me on Duocal and that helped, maybe worth asking about? otherwise just increase the olive oil dressings etc

My levels have actually been on the "low" side lately, otherwise they've been good.
I'd be happy to share tips etc contact me any time.
(keep up the good work)

Low Pro Sausages?? No, I've never seen them although I have seen a recipe somewhere - possibly on here??

I must admit I'm not to adventurous with my meals this time around, worried more about what my girl eats. My fav meal would have to roast vegies ...... any which way, mixed with pasta, balsamic dressing, lots of garlic .....

yum, dairy free ice cream!! I might have to look for that!

Good luck with the diet, are you going back on the maternal diet or just general diet? Maternal diet is just that wee bit harder! how many grams are you on?

let me know if I can help with anything else....

Hi Kady,
I'm Jodie, in Regional Vic, not so far from Melb. I have been off diet since I was 9 but in the past few years have been back on the "maternal diet" I have a (nearly)two year old daughter as a result! ......I'm on the diet again. So, I Know beginning again can all seem very daunting.

All low pro products are avail from http://www.nutricia.com.au/

also, try health food section of your local supermarkets or health food stores, there are heaps of gluten free products that are low pro, more often they're tastier and cheaper too.

Any more questions?, I'd be happy to help.

Hi Ruth,
I have a 23 month old daughter but she is non-PKU. I'm the one with PKU and I'm on the maternal diet at the moment. (was going well but my levels were just a bit too high this week!!)

Ask your dietician but when I first started the coolers they did come in different volumes, 15 or 20 they were called. I'm on 3 of the 20's a day now, Orange flavour.

They are really easy and I found the Orange to be the tastiest. (If you could go as far as saying "tasty"?

Hi Micaela,

Certainly stick to whatever works and if they like it, why change it!
The coolers I have now have added omega 3 oils in them as well. I haven't travelled a great deal with the coolers but a month supply is generally one small box, they would pack quite well individually to because the packaging is squishy, depending on how much you needed and how long the stay will be. I love that they can be frozen then taken later in the day no matter where you are but they are still cool and easy to drink. And they taste so much better than anything else I've tried.

I find it interesting so many people, as well as the young ones aren't having "coolers"? they taste so much better and so much more convenient .......

Hi, before I had my little girl I was a book store manager a good book store should be able to do a search for you and order in, most cookbooks worth getting for PKU are from the USA.

I have "Low protein cookery for PKU" by Virginia E Schuett. ISBN - 0299153843

I got it from our overseas supplier, to be honest I don't use it but if I had kids on the diet rather than myself I would probably use it more often.

Also, It pays to look at some cookbooks for people with allergies "Allergies, egg, nut and dairy" by Jody Vassallo (an Australian book) ISBN 097572052X It has some great ideas in it and all recipes actually list the protein count along with fat, carb, sodium etc

* note ISBN is the number on the back of the book near the barcode, like an ID number makes it much easier for the book store to order if you have that.
