Topic: birthday meal ideas???

Hi Fiona,

Happy Second Birthday to Kaitlyn.

I am still learning and most days I feel that my son Ethan (now 16mths) eats mainly the same food, so I probably shouldn't be giving advice however some other lovely people replied to my previous post of introducing myself and included some ideas for kids aged similar to ours. I think it's in general discussion around the end of November 2009.
As far as Ethan's favourite meal goes he loves pasta. I like to treat him occasionally with some chocolate coated teddybear biscuits I found. They are from Woolworths in with the Gluten free foods. Unfortunately I have thrown out the packet except for the nutritional information. They are honey flavoured I think and coated on one side with chocolate. One 17gram serving (2 x 8.55g biscuits) is only 0.4grams of protein. Great for a treat with a serving of fruit. Let me know if you can't find them from my great description and I'll upload a photo.
Best wishes
Belinda

Hi Bec, I know how awful it is when they go off food for a few days. It's hard not to feel helpless. Hopefully by five days she is starting to fight it and back on the mend.
Have you tried soup? A simple pumpkin one or even a jar of baby food might do the trick till her sore throat clears and her appetite comes back.
Good luck

Hi Alison,
I usually just type into google low protein recipes and have a play. The worst thing is how fast I loose track of time.
Today my husband found a new low protein recipe website.
I checked it out and think it looks good. My son is almost 1 and not really good at eating anything unless it's mashed but I will be trying some of these recipes once he gets the hang of chewing.
Some of the recipes even have video's so you can watch how to make them exactly. You will need to sign up to become a member but it's quick and easy.
Click on the link to check it out

Hope this helps

Hi Kathy, Thanks for the encouragement. Yeah this website is great. I've been checking out the Shopping Trolley discussions and have been impressed. Ethan's PKU doesn't seem so overwhelming since joining The PKU Tree.

Thanks Jolanda, I was after the Apples to Zucchini book a while back but it was out of stock. I will have a look around for it. Thanks for the bread recipe I'll let you know how I go.
Cheers

More replies, you guys are priceless.

Good news is that he's been eating all the variety of veggies I had cooked up for him the other night, thank god he's not being fussy... yet.

Karyn: Thanks for your advice, you make it sound so easy. I guess that comes with experience.
Can I please get the recipe for your wraps, pasties and veggie balls. I'm curious how they hold shape without an egg. Do you think the Well and Good cake tastes better than the Basco?

Jolanda: Sounds like I need to get back into the kitchen. I attempted scones last week and what a failure they turned out to be. Hope the bread is easier. What recipe do you use? I don't have a bread maker either. I have the recipe from the PKU handbook is that any good?
Great to hear that restaurants are so accommodating for PKUers needs.

Thanks again

Thanks so much for the replies.
I did my first cook up of puree fruit and veggies last night since I have had to count his protein. Wow 4 hours later!!! I can only hope it's easier each time. In my own defence we have not yet spent a day with the dietician running through how to count protein and better understand what he can and can't have. We have only been handed some leaflets and told we would have to come back in at another time.

Louise: Sammy sounds like a bright little boy. He looks cheeky in that photo.
We are currently on 11 grams per day but this has only taken effect in the last week. With his formula being 7.5 grams it's only 3.5 grams from food. I'm not really sure if this is high or low. Just do as I'm told. We have been dealing with a few different dieticians at the hospital on our last few visits and they have been too rushed to answer all my silly little questions.
He's still on puree at the moment. I have given him some corn and peas but he gets easily frustrated and gives up altogether with lumps.
My biggest concern is in the next few months when he can handle lumps and also his first birthday party. What can I do for a cake and snacks? I know he's too little to understand but I wanted something that all the kids can eat and not hard to prepare.
I would love the recipe for your mini cinnamon muffins they sound yummy.

Micaela: Wow you must have your hands full with two young boys.
Thank you for such a detailed description of your boys diets. I will be in touch when he gets a little older and I'm all out of meal ideas.

Thanks for your time

Hi all,
What a great site to speak with like minded people with PKU or treating PKU.
My name is Belinda and my son Ethan is now 9 months. We found out Ethan had PKU at 10 days old from his newborn screening test.Ethan is our first child.
I had pushed it to the back of my mind and tried to concentrate on being a great new mum (hard enough work as it is). Our lives hadn't changed that much it was just XP Analog and breastfeeds.
Even now when I think about it or read up on his condition I end up very emotional.
We introduced solids at 6 months and all has been going well. We had experimented with the guidance from the Children's Hospital by giving Ethan baby's yogurt and his levels shot up. The Hospital has now restricted his diet more and think his condition is not as mild as first thought.
Does anyone have any recipes or know products they can recommend for children under 1? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Belinda
