Such an interesting thread! :)

I was on Aminogran until I was 13, and it was a daily fight to get it down me. It used to make me throw up and I'd constantly feel sick and bloated from it and I'd only just start feeling better when it was time to take it again! It used to get mixed up in a foul tasting and smelling paste (I always refused to make it), and I had to wash it down with lemonade and clamp a tissue and hand over my mouth to stop it coming back out.

My parents used to call that my Minos, or simply my drink.

After that I was on Maxamum for a while and now generally speaking I hate orange flavours! Now I take lophlex LQ orange flavour which I don't mind, though it took me a long time to get used to it. I drink it down in two gulps and just refer to it as my formula. If anyone asks what it is I too say it's a protein drink! :)

Hi all,

As promised here is the link to the blog post about the PKU Picnic in the Park.

I hope to see lots of Melbourne PKU families and adults there!

Don't forget to let me know if you're likely to come along. It doesn't ahve to be definite, but in the event that we need to change venues because of the weather I can let you know what the updated plans are.

Hi all,

On May 1st I there is going to be a PKU Picnic in the Park in celebration of PKU Awareness Day.

Come along dressed in blue (the international colour for PKU!) and bring a plate of low protein food (labelled with protein content) and meet with other PKU adults, families and children.

The event is to be held near the playground in Fawkner Park, 3004, at 11.30am. The best way to come along is by public transport (there are both trams and buses, or South Yarra Station is a 10 - 15 min walk away), though limited parking is available around the park. There are BBQs, a playground, toilets and picnic tables. Hopefully I will be able to organise some tables for us to put food on - if anyone has any you could lend us for the big day we'd really appreciate it.

Also, Vegan Perfection has agreed to support the event by providing us with samples of the various flavours of Cheezly cheese and BonVita Rice Milk Chocolate, both of which are suitable for the PKU diet.

BYO chairs/picnic rug and drinks.

SHS/Nutricia has also pledged their support and I am going to approach VitaFlo as well, though they have not confirmed what kind of support they will be offering at this stage.

I will make a post on my blog with further details in the next day or so, including a map of Fawkner Park and a list of public transport that will get you here.

It would be great if we could get some kind of indication as to numbers - I'd love to invite the media along to get some press coverage and also some politicians in the hope we can raise awareness, however we need to make sure that we have a decent number of people if we're going to do this!

Okay, I think that's it. Once the page of info is up on my blog I'll post a link.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me - I don't get onto PKUTree a whole lot, so email is probably best - katebuckland08 AT googlemail DOT com.

Cheers

Hi all,

I know this isn't exactly a workshop, however I am organising a PKU Picnic in the Park in Melbourne. I would like to invite along the media and local politicians but I want to ensure we actually have enough people coming to make us look credible!

I will start a separate post on it.

Topic: Low pro Easter eggs
Posted: Sunday, March 28, 2010 7:24:26 AM
Hi all,

A while back I posted about BonVita Rice Milk Chocolate and the fact that it looks and tastes quite like normal chocolate but is very low in protein (0g/100 for the white chocolate, 2g/100g for the milk chocolate).

well, I've just discovered this stuff makes THE most amazing easter eggs, that look exactly like normal chocolate eggs! You can make marble patterns and everything!

Melt one block of the chocolate down in a bowl set in a saucepan heating water on the stove (don't let the water touch the bowl and stir constantly) and then you can pour or brush into moulds as per usual. To make the eggs I just placed the chocoalate on a warm baking tray (the bit I wanted to seal to another piece of chocolate was face down) for a few seconds, then pressed the two halfs together. This works for both solid and hollow eggs. You can also get some moulds that actually clip together for the same effect but 'seamless'.

You can buy the rice milk chocolate in organic shops, but if you can't find it you can get it http://www.veganperfection.com.au/moredetails.php?id=140

That link will take you to the milk chocolate but if you snoop around a bit you will find the free white chocolate as well.

I'm honestly so excited... I wish my mum could have done this when I was a kid. I hated those sugar eggs lol. This is the first easter I've ever had with chocolate I can actually eat!

If you want to see how they come out, I have posted some pictures on my blog (link is in my signature).

Cheers

Hi Kerri,

I would be quite interested in coming along to this if I can get the day off work.

Is the venue easy to get to via public transport?

Cheers

Hi Allison,

I tried this once with Easiphen and the result wasn't pretty. Personally, if I have out of date formula I throw it out.

Topic: Rice milk chocolate - the white chocolate one is free!
Posted: Thursday, February 11, 2010 12:29:48 PM
Hey everyone,

I have found some chocolate which is completely free!

Bonvita Rice Milk Chocolate - the white chocolate flavour is 0g/100g. The 'milk' chocolate flavour is 2g/100g (which is the whole block - same size as a small cadbury block).

They're both pretty tasty... very close to the taste of real chocolate. The milk chocolate one is a bit dusty looking in appearance but very tasty.

I am not so fond of the white one, but then I don't like white chocolate that much - my husband (non PKU) likes it though and says its very similar to normal white chocolate. I was thinking of breaking it up and making low protein raspberry and white chocolate muffins!

I found it in an organic shop called Ripe at the Prahran Market in Melbourne (I think they also have a shop at the Victoria Market), but if you google it you can probably find it elsewhere.

Topic: PKU adults meet up in Melbourne
Posted: Wednesday, February 10, 2010 12:19:47 PM
Hi all,

A few of us PKU adults have decided to get together for a coffee and a chat on 27 February in Melbourne.

If you would like to come along please get in touch with us! We've got a Facebook Group called PKU Australia and there is an event invite on there, of feel free to email me.

It would be great to make this a regular event so we can get to know each other and build up a bit of an in-person support network.

See you all there! :)

Topic: Idea... would anyone be interested in this?
Posted: Tuesday, February 09, 2010 3:27:21 PM
Hi all,

I have been doing a lot of thinking recently about how to support the PKU diet here in Australia. I had wanted to import low pro foods from the UK and America, but it doesn't seem to be viable as I can't afford the inital financial outlay.

When I lived in the UK there was a company that made low pro food to order and then shipped it out.

I was thinking of starting up something similar here in Australia as I love to cook and I seem to have the whole low pro cooking thing down pat!

I was thinking I could bake and sell cakes, biscuits, pies/veggie tart type things, bread, crumpets etc. I would ask those who order as part of the payment to supply some low pro products - perhaps just a box of the baking mix, tin of Milupa or egg replacer per order as this would help in keeping costs down. If you would be interested is this something you'd be happy to do?

I'm not sure how viable this is - in the UK PKU products and formula are given freely on the health system, so other than a yearly prescription charge there is very little cost involved in such a project. It might end up quite expensive here without donations of products.

Is this the sort of service anyone would be interested in? Please don't get too excited - I'm only thinking about it at this stage and I'm not sure what sort of hoops I would have to jump through to be allowed to do this legally, but I would really love to do this if it can work.

Let me know your thoughts!

Cheers
Kate
