Hi Nikita!! Welcome! My name is Fiona, and I have a 2 year old with PKU. Like you and probably all of us here), I had never heard of PKU until my daughter was 4 days old and her test came back positive!! (I also have a 4 year old non-PKUer) When Kaitlyn was starting on solids, I gave her a bit of puree carrot to start with, then I mixed it with puree zucchini and later (week or 2), I added sweet potato, or potato, but you would have to "count" the amount of potato you added. Basically, she lived on the carrot or the carrot/zucchini mix until her allowance went up - she started at 0.3g, then went up to 0.7g, then when we decreased "normal" formula, her allowance went up significantly. I hope that helps... there are alot of ppl here willing to help and to give you advice, and to give you tons of support :) don't be shy to ask for help!! :)

Hi all, I haven't been on for a while, busy selling and moving house (and dealing with a toddler and a nearly 2-year old!!)
Anyway, Kaitlyn (PKU) is turning 2 at the end of this month. I wanted to cook her something special for her birthday dinner, but I'm kinda out of ideas. I think I will give her rice bubbles and rice milk for b/fast(1.5g), and a veggie dish I have in my freezer for lunc (about 1.5g). She is on 7g of protein a day, (and allowing for snacks)that should leave me about 2.5 - 3g for dinner for something yummy for her.
Any ideas??? I would love to hear from all of you, and what you eat on special occasions (or give to your little ones!!) Thanks heaps, Fiona

In Woolie's, (dessert aisle) I found Heinz stewed fruit in 3 varieties apple/rhubarb with vanilla bean (0.2g pro/100g) apple/apricot with spice (0.4g pro/100g) and another variety (which I can't remember, but it was about 0.8g/100g)

Hi Raelene, I find breakfast the hardest meal to give something to Kaitlyn. I've tried cereal (hates it), so usually I give her banana (but she's getting sick of them) and some lo-pro bread I have made, but she's decided she wants "real" bread instead of her special bread, and always tries to steal her big brother's. I was going to post for some brekkie ideas, but I'll try sago for her, and maybe I'll try making stewed fruit too..

There is a recipe for lo-protein sausages in the "apple to zucchini" cookbook (page 279 if you have it), but if not, the recipe is: 500g orange sweet potatoes (finely chopped or grated) 300g mushrooms ( finely chopped or grated) 1 lge onion (200g) (finely chopped or grated) 2/3 cup bacon dripping or solid vegetable shortening 1 2/3 cup (200g)Lopro baking mix 4 - 6 Tbspn kitchen bouquet (for colour only, I don't usually add this)
Cut or grate all veg or put in food processor add dripping or shortening in a large frying pan, add veg and saute med/high heat for approx 7 min (soft but not mushy) Season with salt/pepper or other seasonings as desired remove from pan, add baking mix, stir until incorporated. Let cool for a few minutes. Now, you can either shape into burger patties (30g ea - 0.5g protein ea) or meatballs (10g ea - 0.2g protein ea) OR you can put in sheep casings to make ito sausages (35g ea 0.6g protein ea) I usually make a big batch, shape into burgers or patties, and freeze. When Kaitlyn wants one, I just defrost in microwave and cook in oil until brown and hot. Hope that helps!! :)

Hi everyone, my daughter, Kaitlyn (15 months) has now decided she doesn't like the pku bread (she prefers "real" bread which she has a slice occasionally as a treat) I have been making the bread recipe from the PKU handbook, as well as experimenting with the recipes in the "apple to zucchini" recipe book. I find the texture is like a muffin or a crumpet - really "heavy" and "hard" - you know what I mean... Has anyone got arecipe which is more similar th "normal" bread, I really need to get her to eat the PKU bread. also, on a side note, cooking with the lopro flour, I have noticed it doesn't brown, - for bread or cakes or anything - is that everyone's experience?? (I don't remember from my TAFE classes on baking what ingredient in the bread makes the crust brown, but it is obviously lacking in the lopro flour) If anyone can tell me, I'd just like to know for my own info!

I absolutely LOVE my "Apples to Zucchini - a collection of low protein recipes" cookbook. I had a hard time finding it in Australia, but my husband's uncle lives in America, and he bought it for me. You may be able to find a supplier if you google it. It is a bit expensive, but worth it, and the recipes are all calculated out with amounts of protein. My husband and I don't like vegetables, but when I cook for our daughter (PKU), we end up having the same vegies - they are yum!!
