Hi everyone,
My name is Hayley and I live in Bermuda!
I was on the internet looking for forums about Maternal PKU since I have PKU and am "on the long road" to bring my levels down. My nutritionists are in Boston, so have great contacts, but it's also nice to see that so many of you have had very successful pregnancies as a result of maintaining the PKU diet.
I have started to bring my level down in the last month and a half. To be honest, it was not that easy in the begining, but once my level hit 7.2mgl, I started to have faith in my progress. I now only eat low protein (special ordered foods) and lots of fruit and veggies. I am on 6 grams of protein a day now. Prior to starting the Low Pro diet I was allowed 16 grams. Hopefully my levels will drop faster and I will be able to "start the process" so to speak!
Anyway, just sharing my story, and just to let you all know that it's very reassuring knowing that of the very few persons with PKU out there in this world, that there is a close network of people who can share thoughts, ideas and support to others with PKU! look forward to reading more posts and updating you with my progress!

Good 4 u... it is well worth it! My little girl is almost 3 now... smarter then others her age and she was unplanned... she is a true miracle...
Hang in there... being on the maternal diet u'll find u don't want a lot of the foods u use 2 eat... I didn't.
Plus by the end of your pregnancy u'll have trouble getting ur levels up! Especially if u have a child like mine! LOL

That is great news. I hope it goes really well for you :) I am just starting the maternal PKU diet as well now. We can do it together! :)

Hey everyone, i too have just started the pre-con diet. Im in Ireland and would love to chat about it to anyone who is or has been on it. I stress out at times about the bad effects that high levels can have on my baby and think the worst. This causes me upset to think of how much could go wrong and the harm that i could cause. But i guess i have to stay postive and do my very best.Im only on it a couple of weeks so guess maybe this is just nerves? Did anyone else panic about this?

Absolutely Daisy! But I was told not to worry unless you levels are consistently high. And if they are I'd do more than the required blood tests until they came back down.
Welcome Hayley, I have been on the maternal diet before with my son and am back on it again for my second pregnancy. I'm currently on 15g protein a day, and I am 21 weeks pregnant. This time I started at 9.5g a day. But with my son I started on 6g a day.
It is really hard, and I had to learn the diet from scratch because I was taken off diet at 2, so had no recollection of what it was like or what it involved.

Hi all
my name is Nicola and my story seems similar to a lot of others on here. I am 27 years old and have been married for 3 years. Myself and my husband are planning to have a baby in the near future and I have begun to make the necessary changes to my diet after being off the diet for some time. I am just looking for a bit of general support and advice from people that really know what it is like.
